  • Responsibilities

    Position Summary:

    Create technical publications, including but not limited to user guide and online help system for customer software.


    Position responsibilities:

    • Deliver professional quality deliverables on time and in budget.
    • Plan work based on provided scoping information.
    • The XML/DITA Technical Writer will help write, edit and maintain documentation for multiple outputs using a single source XML based system.
    • Work in a small team environment to implement a topic base structured authoring environment using DITA within a component content management system.
    • Manage review workflows using hosted and online review platforms.
    • Create and edit images to be used in documentation.
    • Work directly with client, developers, and products to gather content.
    • Organize material to create outlines and drafts.
    • Write new content, edit existing content, and provide peer reviews for other writers on the team.
    • Match defined editorial standards.
    • Guide illustrators in creating and modifying illustrations.
    • Use existing templates to create layouts matching defined design standards.
    • Possibly work with designers as needed to develop new content.
    • Work well with team members on the development and publications teams, and possibly others.
    • Contribute to team knowledge and resources such as glossaries and processes.
    • Provide estimates and status updates.
    • Proactively address or communicate challenges, concerns, and process improvements.
    • Perform other special projects or duties when required.


    Essential skills and experience required:

    • Minimum 5 years of technical writing experience, preferably in a related technical field.
    • Proven ability to plan and implement content development projects from start to finish
    • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
    • Expert knowledge of DITA.
    • Understanding and experience with component content management systems
    • Solid understanding of topic-based authoring and information mapping concepts as they relate to DITA.
    • Very familiar with writing in a structured authoring environment.
    • Comfortable working with CMS.
    • Familiarity with desktop publishing tools is a plus
    • Ability to work well with engineers and programmers, find information sources, and quickly understand complex technical subjects.
    • Solid experience with at least one content development toolset used in a professional publication development environment.
    • Ability to work independently and with teams.
    • Creative self-starter with a strong work ethic.
    • Bachelor’s degree in communications or technology preferred.
